CGS Saber Lex Francois Earns Gold at State Fencing Championship
Center for Global Studies student-athlete Lex Francois won the gold in fencing on March 2 at the Varsity Individual State Championship, held at the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven in Woodbridge.
High school fencers from across the state competed in the champions. Francois won his final bout in the Individual Men’s Saber event 15-9. The event had 35 fencers representing 14 schools in Connecticut. Francois is the first fencer from the Center for Global Studies to secure a gold medal at the varsity level.
“For Lex, this win is a fine addition to a growing list of fencing accomplishments,” said Nicholas Banas, the CGS Fencing coach. “On behalf of our team and school, we would like to extend our congratulations to Lex Francois for his big win!”
Francois is a co-captain of CGS Fencing and is responsible for coaching the saber squad. He frequently attends regional and national fencing competitions, and this year has earned the rank of “C” at a USFA event.
The CGS Fencing team is open to all freshmen and sophomores at the Center for Global Studies and Brien McMahon High School. The season runs from Dec. 1 to the first week in March. Equipment is provided by the team, free of charge.
